Marriage is a trip sometimes, and I have to share the funniest conversation that Jamie and I had a few weeks ago that maybe some of you can relate to.
Recently a package showed up from Amazon that was addressed to Jamie. I handed it to him once it arrived and asked him what he’d ordered. He smirked, opened the box, and pulled out two iPhone 6+ armbands – one black and one pink. He said that when he was shopping around for his he saw the pink option and thought that I’d appreciate one too since I would be getting back to running again soon.
He tossed it over to me like it was no big deal, but it was a big deal to me and really made my day. He was genuinely shocked that something so small made me so happy, and I tried my best to explain that thoughtful stuff like this just fills my “love tank” (a term coined by our pastor during pre-marital counseling.) After 5.5 years of marriage he should know this about me, right?
He thought that all he did was buy me a cheap-o armband, but all I understood this as was “You love me! You listen to me! You consider me! You thought of me!”. Basically, we couldn’t have interpreted the situation any more differently. 😉 It was never about how much money he spent (it could have cost a dollar for all I care), but the fact that he listened and thought about my specific interests was everything.
Let’s be real. While marriage is often the best thing ever, it’s also super tough sometimes, too. Jamie and I have talked dozens of times about how if we could just be mind-readers that marriage would be a breeze. Unfortunately we don’t have the ability to mind-read (dang!), but being a good listener and then acting on what you hear (which sometimes requires reading between the lines) sure seems like the next best thing!
Let’s chat!
What’s your love language? Have you ever had a situation with your spouse similar to this one?
Hi! I’m Erica, and I absolutely adore sharing my life on this website with you! I come here almost daily to blab about all of the things related to being a regular wife and mother in today’s ever-evolving society. I share about our new home, what’s on our kitchen table, what we’re hanging in our closets, where we’re traveling to next, my crazy 5 a.m. work outs, how I make time for girlfriends, our faith, and much more. We always have a lot of balls in the air and somewhat thrive on the chaos. I believe in the power of story-telling as a form of inspiration and entertainment, so I’m here to do both! I was born and raised in north Alabama and recently re-planted roots here again after my husband transitioned out of the Army (he is now in the Reserve and it’s going so well!) I’m a super proud mom to three little girls (ages 7, 4, and 1) who seem to be the stars of the show around here (for good reason – they’re pretty great!) I’m so glad you found me and are here reading! I hope we can get to know each other here on the blog as well as Facebook and/or Instagram. xoxo
