So if you were even half watching the Super Bowl commercials the other day, I’m sure you saw (or at least heard about) the Nationwide commercial.
That stupid stupid stupid commerical! It made my blood boil. Jamie’s distant cousin lost their toddler daughter in their backyard swimming pool about three years ago, and all I could think about was how he and his wife must have felt watching that commercial. I can only imagine if they were watching the game with other families how it must have totally ruined their night. In my opinion, it was inappropriate for the Super Bowl. Just my opinion.
I also hated it because it drove the knife deeper on my number one parenting fear – losing Hadley because of my own negligence. Oh, it just got me all worked up, and I was glad to see that it got a bunch of other people worked up too.
I debated sharing the link, but if you’re curious you’ll go find it anyway. Here ya go.
I can’t bash it entirely though because one really good thing came out of it for our family. Before the Super Bowl was even over, I had furniture straps, TV straps, and blind cord wraps ordered from Amazon that should be here on my doorstep at some point today.
I read an article when I was pregnant with Hadley about a four year old daughter who was playing in her room on a quiet Saturday morning and pulled out her chest drawers to climb to the top. Her parents, who were sleeping in the room next door, heard a crash and found their daughter clinging to life under the chest of drawers. She died later that day. I’m so scarred from that story and am terrified of something like that happening to her. I’m sure those parents were awesome parents, but they just couldn’t have foreseen that accident happening. That’s my issue; I’m not-so-secretly terrified of something negligent happening to her that I could have prevented if I’d have just seen it’s potential to happen.
With our heavy furniture, I see the potential for it happening. Jamie just caught her two days ago standing in the bottom drawer of our refinished TV stand. All by herself she pulled out the drawers and climbed in while pulling on the next drawer up. Good gracious.
So this weekend we’ll be doing some more baby proofing around here to protect our mischievous little 14 month old. I know I can’t protect her from everything, but you better believe I’m going to try my hardest to do what I can to keep her safe.
Please tell me about the steps you’ve taken to protect your babe around the house. We have the cabinet locks, outlet plugs, and now the furniture and TV straps, but what am I missing? I know I also need to eventually get something to prevent her from opening the exterior doors. Hmm. Would love and very much appreciate your feedback!
Hi! I’m Erica, and I absolutely adore sharing my life on this website with you! I come here almost daily to blab about all of the things related to being a regular wife and mother in today’s ever-evolving society. I share about our new home, what’s on our kitchen table, what we’re hanging in our closets, where we’re traveling to next, my crazy 5 a.m. work outs, how I make time for girlfriends, our faith, and much more. We always have a lot of balls in the air and somewhat thrive on the chaos. I believe in the power of story-telling as a form of inspiration and entertainment, so I’m here to do both! I was born and raised in north Alabama and recently re-planted roots here again after my husband transitioned out of the Army (he is now in the Reserve and it’s going so well!) I’m a super proud mom to three little girls (ages 7, 4, and 1) who seem to be the stars of the show around here (for good reason – they’re pretty great!) I’m so glad you found me and are here reading! I hope we can get to know each other here on the blog as well as Facebook and/or Instagram. xoxo
